Job Description: Director, Market Conduct Risk Management, Insurance Operations The Operational Risk Management team is a strategic business partner supporting Canadian Operations leadership in meeting our Client 2020 goals by providing comprehensive understanding of operational risk and contributing creative solutions to manage risk.

We partner with Canadian Operations leadership as well as second line of defence Risk and Compliance stakeholders to assess operational risks, enhance control frameworks, provide oversight on risk policy requirements and ultimately enable the business to evolve while maintaining risk within appetite.

The scope of the team is broad; our internal clients include all Operations business areas supporting Group Benefits, Individual Insurance, and Wealth.

As Director, Market Conduct Risk Management, you will focus on identifying Sun Lifes exposure to market conduct risks inherent in our distribution model in particular as it relates to sales strategies, application completion, and executing new business and inforce processes.

Working with our Product Development, Distribution, Compliance, Legal, Tax, Operational Risk Management, New Business and Underwriting teams, you will further develop and document the Market Conduct control framework including recommendation of additional controls required to mitigate risk.

This Director is accountable for working with the underwriting function and conducting file reviews to ensure incoming applications meet sales suitability requirements.

This includes the ongoing testing of controls to ensure they remain adequate.

Main Accountabilities: Lead the ongoing and periodic review of existing and new sales strategies to identify risks and establish sustainable controls.Develop and implement suitable monitoring of controls, including identification of success measures to provide assurance that controls are operating effectively.Keep current with Sun Lifes Market Conduct Operating Guideline and regulatory guidance.Provide structured program management around implementation of new control processes with respect to Market Conduct Risk.Perform Sales Suitability file reviews of higher-risk applications (i.e.

review case file for evidence of suitability, appropriate advisor consultation, etc.); coordinate with Health & Financial Underwriting to handle file reviews in a timely fashion; consult with Tax and Legal, recommend suitability decisions to senior leadership.Monitor and analyze data (i.e.

lapse rates, complaints, values) to identify trends by sales strategy/advisor/MGA; work with partners in Product, Distribution, Compliance to action.Work in partnership with Compliance on investigations and to flag advisors/MGAs for review and audit.Consult/negotiate, as necessary with Stakeholders and IT, on projects mandated to address risk gaps.Ensure operational controls are being executed as expected and provide support and expertise on high risk files.Lead and oversee remediation plans related to breach of controls.

Competencies: Strong knowledge of insurance products, distribution sales practices and new business processes.Knowledge of wealth planning strategies using insurance products..Data analysis skills; ability to find actionable insights from data and present to management.Facilitation skills and project management expertise.Strong collaboration skills including listening and facilitation skills with the ability to work with various functional teams.Ability to prioritize and manage various activities concurrently.Strong partnership, networking and influencing skills.Excellent communication skills, both verbal and written.Strong analytic and diagnostic skills dealing with opportunities and issues.Ability to work independently and be self-directed, as well as direct priorities for a team.Able to distill the complex while not oversimplifying and missing critical requirements.Willingness to challenge paradigms and look for innovative solutions to complex situations.

Unique Requirements: University degree or post secondary education.10+ years insurance industry experience with a solid understanding of Regulatory environment (will consider equivalent experience in wealth industry with exposure to insurance).

The Base Pay range is for the primary location for which the job is posted.

It may vary depending on the work location of the successful candidate or other factors.

In addition to Base Pay, eligible Sun Life employees participate in various incentive plans, payment under which is discretionary and subject to individual and company performance.

Certain sales focused roles have sales incentive plans based on individual or group sales results.
