– no changes to the information, but the format has been updated Youth Supervisor (Correctional Officer) Correctional Services Growth to R18 TMA 6 As-and-When needed auxiliary positions available.

This is a temporary opportunity for 1 year.

This posting will remain Open until the position is filled.

This is an Ongoing posting without a scheduled closing date.

This posting may be open for up to 6 months with the Closing Date being added 2 weeks prior to the scheduled Closing Date.

Your confidence and experience assisting youth is your greatest skill, and our greatest asset Working directly with youth in custody who are involved in the Youth Justice system and reporting directly to the Senior Youth Supervisor, you will carry out duties in a professional manner in keeping with your experience, training and education and according to the Standards of Conduct for Public Service Employees .

Drawing from your skills and know-how, you will strive to effect positive change for residents housed in a youth custody centre, develop a collegial environment with co-workers, and ensure clear and constructive communications are maintained with supervisors.

On behalf of the Ministry of Children and Family Development, using your strength of character regarding the nature of this position, you will maintain trust and honesty with residents and colleagues.

In this safety-sensitive position, it will be your responsibility to maintain rules and standards of good order and discipline within established policies and procedures.

You will uphold the custody, safety and supervision of residents while preserving effective control through appropriate human relations skills and, where necessary, authority.

Utilizing your expertise in relationship-building, you will organize, instruct and supervise residents participating in all centre activities.

Perhaps most critical, you will at all times instil a positive influence on residents through appropriate role-modeling, behaviour support and leadership while performing other related duties as required.

As a Youth Supervisor, you hold a Peace Officer designation and are held to a high standard of conduct by the Employer, Public and Courts both on and off duty.

As the custody centre is a 24 hour operation, successful applicants will be required to work evenings/weekends and a variety of shifts on an “As and When” required basis.

Seasonal peaks in availability of work are to be expected.

Job Requirements: In order to be considered for this position, your application must clearly demonstrate how you meet the education and experience as outlined below: Grade 12 Diploma or equivalent with supplementary courses in human behaviour OR Diploma/Certificate in a related field (e.g., social work, child care, psychology, sociology, criminology etc.) OR Bachelor Degree in a related field (e.g., social work, child care, psychology, sociology, criminology etc.) Preference may be given to applicants with related experience working with a vulnerable population (preferably youth).

Must possess and continue to maintain a Valid BC Class 5 Driver’s Licence In addition, applicants selected to move forward in the hiring process Must be willing to obtain and maintain a valid First Aid and CPR certificate Must successfully complete and pass the Physical Fitness Abilities Test (COPAT) and medical evaluation by the Occupational Health Programs (more information below) Complete an Enhanced Security Screening (more information below) Medical Assessment with includes: A Tuberculosis (TB) test prior to booking an appointment for a Medical Assessment Successful completion of a Medical Assessment Provisos Must be willing and able to travel Must be willing and able to work shift work, including evenings, weekends and holidays) within a 24/7 operation Must be willing and able to work in an environment with youth who face significant health, addictions and mental health challenges and who may engage in violent behaviours Must be willing and able to respond to emergencies and apply physical and mechanical restraints Upon hiring will be required to sign a Standards of Conduct declaration Applicants selected to move forward in the hiring process may be assessed on the Knowledge, Skills, Abilities and Competencies as outlined in the attached Job Profile located in the Additional Information section at the bottom of the posting.

Reference checks will be conducted for all successful applicants.

COPAT: If you meet all the above stated Selection Criteria, you will asked to complete the Correctional Officer Physical Abilities Test (COPAT).

A Recruitment Officer will contact you with instructions on how you may register for COPAT.

You will need to bring a completed Medical Clearance form (signed, stamped and dated by a Medical Practitioner), your Valid Driver’s Licence and your Valid First Aid Certificate.

Successful completion of COPAT is a requirement of this position.

ENHANCED SECURITY SCREENING: Applicants who are successful after their interview and reference checks will be made a conditional offer of employment.
