We’re looking for a talented Intermediate Software Engineer to join our growing team, in Toronto, Ottawa or Kingston.

As an engineer who focuses more on the backend, you will play a central role in the development and delivery of Ratehub’s applications and services.

The successful candidate will work closely with product managers, designers, QA engineers and other developers to build experiences that exceed customers’ expectations and improve the way they learn about and choose financial products.

Your Responsibilities Create and consume HTTP APIs to power insurance quoting experiences on Ratehub; build and maintain connections with 3rd-party HTTP APIs to retrieve or export information Build new functionality by extending our suite of event-driven microservices Write automated tests to ensure correctness and protect against regressions Instrument services for maximum observability, configure alerts and monitor services in production using our observability platform Build web application logic using the Flux architecture pattern Work with support, marketing, business and other team members to identify product and process improvements, suggest implementation options, trade-off alternatives, and make engineering decisions Occasionally give advice on technical issues impacting partnerships and discuss issues with technical teams from partner companies Your Qualifications 3 years of hands-on experience building HTTP-based web services; familiar with REST best practices and have and understanding of GraphQL Proficiency with document databases (e.g.

MongoDB, Firebase, jsonb) and relational databases (e.g.

MySQL, PostgreSQL) Experience integrating 3rd-party HTTP APIs into services and applications Fluency with JavaScript; some experience building Node/Express-based microservices preferred; experience with ES6 and a modern JS application framework (React, Ember, Angular, etc.) is a plus Experience with PHP, Java, Python, or other OO programming language High degree of comfort with Git source code management Familiarity with Linux or other Unix-like environment; feeling at home in the terminal Strong curiosity and ability to learn quickly; strong desire to write modular, maintainable, and testable code Experience with serverless functions a plus (AWS Lambda, OpenFaaS) Excellent verbal and written communication skills Post-secondary degree; Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in CS/CE/SE-related major preferred but not strictly required Our tech stack: Language/Framework: Node/Express, Laravel, Java Databases: PostgreSQL, Mongo, Redis Eventing/Pub-Sub: Kafka Front-end: React/Next.js CI: GitHub Actions Packaging and Deployment: Docker, Kubernetes, Helm, OpenFaaS, GCP/GKE Observability and Monitoring: New Relic CULTURE FIT Fun: You bring your whole self to work and make an effort to contribute to our workplace culture in a positive way Do the right thing: You are able to assess both customer and company needs to make good business choices Growth mindset: You love to learn and try new things Willing to Help: You care about your team members and are willing to help out outside your realm of expertise.
