Position Overview

The People Processes and Solutions team within Human Resources is currently seeking a Full-time Temporary Relief Advisor, HR Academic for approximately 18 months.

This position reports to the Manager, HR People, Processes and Solutions and work is directed by the Senior Specialist, Academic Affairs and Operations in the Cumming School of Medicine.

The Advisor, HR Academic is responsible for the Academic career processes and the Academic life cycle.

The work requires managing competing interests with satisfactory outcomes for all, including high need for accuracy and attention to detail, numerous conflicting deadlines, and continuously shifting priorities.

This position is key to the execution of Academic career processes.

The nature of work requires the management of routine to complex and confidential HR issues and, in some cases, conflicts that require direct involvement and resolution.

This position is required to analyze a situation, identify what questions to ask, diagnose an issue and make a recommendation, and work collaboratively with HR Partners and HR Centers of Expertise.

Work includes high volume, variety, constant interruptions and multiple simultaneous deadlines and competing interests driven by internally and externally imposed deadlines and requirements.

Position Description

Summary of Key Responsibilities (job functions include but are not limited to):

  • Ensures compliance and appropriate implementation of the Collective Agreement(s) (Academic) and the various University academic policies, procedures and programs
  • Assists with the procedures for the appointment and promotion of clinicals and adjuncts;
  • Assists with the tenure, promotion, transfer between ranks and assessment procedures in accordance with the Collective Agreement and the GFC Handbook;
  • Assists with the Academic merit process;
  • Manages the process for the research and scholarship leave for CSM; works collaboratively with the People, Processes & Solutions team
  • Maintains the CSM Database and file room
  • Works closely with the Senior Specialist, Academic Affairs and Operations

Qualifications / Requirements:

  • Bachelor degree in a Human Resources, Business Administration or a related field
  • 3 years of experience in a human resources advisory role; or an equivalent combination of experience and education
  • Good knowledge of human resources principles, legislation and programs and collective agreements
  • Experience working in a unionized environment is an asset
  • Experience working in a post-secondary environment is an asset
  • CPHR designation is an asset
  • Ability to function independently and as part of a team
  • Ability to work well under pressure with minimal supervision
  • Demonstrates solid judgment and professionalism
  • Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal
  • Strong interpersonal skills, with the ability to build effective working relationship and collaborate with internal and external clients
  • Strong organizational and time management skills required, with the ability to prioritize and manage competing deadlines
  • Proven work ethic with a focus on maintaining confidentiality and attention to detail
  • Strong proficiency with Word, Excel, PeopleSoft or other HRIS
