Chief Medical Officer (CMO) – Estimated at 0.5 FTE

The work location for this role is flexible and may reside in any of the six cities STARS currently has a base location. 

Is this challenge for you?

Reporting to the Chief Executive Officer, the Chief Medical Officer will be a member of the Executive Leadership Team and be responsible to ensure the STARS organization remains patient focused and strives for excellence in critical care provision.

The role of the CMO embodies full clinical oversight for the organization and is accountable for the management of clinical and medical care provided by STARS with an unyielding focus on safety and excellence in care, education, and research.


  • Develops a strong medical leadership team that will be collaborative and effective in meeting the objectives of operational excellence at their respective bases.

    Acts as the chair of MOMT (Medical Operations Management Team)

  • Works effectively in collaboration with the Lead Clinical Officer in a “Dyad” model for the Chief Medical Office
  • Participates in the execution of the STARS Strategic Plan
  • Oversees medical operational plans
  • Provides leadership to the clinical and organizational safety portfolio
  • Supports STARS’ Privacy Officer with any patient or clinically related items
  • Oversees the development and monitoring of STARS clinical standards, practice guidelines, Critical Care Medical Control Protocols (CCMCPs) standard operating procedures, adherence to compliance with all regulatory requirements, and STARS clinical and patient safety processes
  • Plans, develops, implements, and has general oversight for medical budgets with input to other organizational budgets as required
  • Oversees work of the Research Committee.

    Facilitates research and ensures alignment with STARS’ mission and strategic plan

  • Partner with the Chief Operating Officer (COO) on clinical education curriculum as needed
  • Participates in regularly scheduled Executive meetings, Board meetings, professional organizational meetings, and external stakeholder meetings relevant to the medical function
  • Other duties as assigned


  • Highly developed understanding of strategic planning, leadership development, change management, performance management, risk management, and resource management
  • Leadership style that is results focused, collaborative, and respectful
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills for negotiating scenarios, coaching, facilitating, conflict resolution and consensus building
  • Ability to analyze processes, enact change and think operationally and strategically to achieve goals
  • Able to react to change productively
  • Budget setting and forecasting


  • A physician in good standing in one of our three provincial jurisdictions with a critical care subspecialty including Emergency, ICU or Anesthesia, or related field
  • Minimum of ten years of clinical practice including a strong research and education focus, and a sound understanding of Critical Care and/or Transport Medicine practices, principles, and regulations.
  • Experience teaching at a graduate or undergraduate level and experience leading a multidisciplinary team in an educational environment
  • This role will require occasional travel between STARS base

Emergency Communication Specialist, STARS Vigilant Team

Type: Full Time Min.

Experience: Mid Level

Emergency Communications Specialist
– Level 2 (1.0 FTE) – STARS Vigilant, Calgary Base

Is this challenge for you?

The Emergency Communications Specialist role works within the STARS Emergency Link Center which serves as the communications center for both STARS’ Vigilant Industry Services and Helicopter Emergency Medical Service (HEMS).

This role answers both emergency and non-emergency calls related to various industries across North America.

Requests may be initiated by the general public, EMS, rural physicians, remote locations, and industrial sites.

The Emergency Communications Specialist follows standard operating procedures to effectively handle incoming calls, respond to work alone alarms, complete welfare checks, and activate client protocols to confirm the safety of lone and at-risk workers.

This role also plays an integral part in supporting business development through various sales and marketing activities.

Do you have what it takes?

  • Answer incoming calls from the general public and industry professionals to initiate emergency responses for various industries
  • Respond to work alone alarms for individuals working in isolation or in dangerous situations
  • Follow established protocols to ensure each call is handled effectively and efficiently
  • Accurately input information into the computer systems in real time
  • Recognize when situations are beyond the scope of training and escalate as required
  • Complete administrative tasks as assigned
  • Participate in Quality Management process and continue to improve skills based on feedback received
  • Accurately research potential expansion opportunities for STARS Vigilant across various industries
  • Complete sales-focused tasks, including cold calling, lead generation and various prospecting activities as assigned
  • Accurately and efficiently document sales and marketing activities

In addition, you will have:

  • Strong verbal communication and listening skills; able to ask key questions and navigate a conversation with prospective clients
  • Outstanding customer service skills and a professional phone manner, including the ability to build strong client/partner relationships
  • Demonstrate a genuine interest to collaborate and problem solve with internal and external stakeholders
  • Critically analyze client/prospect needs and apply a solution-based approach to maintain client retention
  • Adaptable to changing situations and work environment
  • Demonstrated healthy response to stress and maintain control and composure in a high-consequence environment
  • Ability to understand and follow standard operating procedures
  • Proficient use of technology including public safety telecommunications software, mapping, telephony, and Microsoft Office is ideal; exposure to navigating and administrating the SalesForce CRM product would be an asset
  • Minimum typing speed of 30 WPM
  • Ability to triage multiple calls and work alone alarms concurrently
  • Ability to clearly articulate how STARS Vigilant can enhance emergency plans and safety programs
  • Be able to identify growth opportunities and paths to reach greater prospects within targeted industries
  • A High School diploma or equivalent required
  • Experience Oil & Gas preferred and experience in a professional customer service or dispatch centre environment, including handling situations that require problem solving, critical thinking and conflict resolution skills would be beneficial
  • Previous Business Development or Customer Relationship Management Experience preferred

This is a shift-work position requiring day, night, weekend, and holiday support, as well as a willingness to work some overtime.

While this role is not directly involved in the coordination of Helicopter Emergency Medical Services, you may be exposed to sensitive, and occasionally distressing, information related to trauma patients.

The ability to handle this type of information effectively and confidentially is a must.
